Sarasota County Fair presents show animals raised by local kids

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – People from around the Suncoast soaking in the sun at the 100th annual Sarasota County Fair today.

Along with the food and rides, visitors can also check out show animals, raised by local kids, as part of Sarasota County’s 4H program. The program teaches kids non-traditional skills like caring for livestock, gardening and sustainability.

“These children take care of these animals– put a lot of hard work into them, put a lot of time in, just trying to develop them,” said Bill McClain, a member of the Sarasota County Agricultural Fair Association’s Board of Directors.

Fair leaders say the event and the 4H program are like a time capsule into the Sunshine State’s historic agricultural tradition.

They say with Sarasota’s growth, having recently been named one of the fastest growing places in America by U.S. News and World Report, much of the farmland has been bought up for development.

“This used to be a big beef industry area and citrus industry area, and those are all dwindling to house more people so that means less kids doing agriculture,” said Lindsey Mills, chair of the Small Animal Tent at the fair.
