BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The Berkeley County School District has called on their top food critics to decide what should be in their schools’ cafeterias.
The district’s first-ever “Taste, Play, Connect” event allowed Berkeley County students to taste-test food from a variety of vendors at Cane Bay High School on Saturday. From there, each student voted a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” depending on what they thought about each item.
Some of the items range from both current and new products from Hershey’s Ice Cream to Tyson Foods to General Mills/Pillsbury and more.
Berkeley County School District child nutrition director Benita Smith says all of the 13 vendors are affiliated with the South Carolina Purchasing Alliance Bid, which allows the district to purchase the products based on USDA regulations.
“We believe, especially starting at breakfast, that we can get nutritional items into the children at breakfast, it starts their day off,” Smith said. “It starts their learning process. So then, followed up by lunch, we provide a hot lunch for them. A lot of our students may or may not have hot lunches at home. So, we always want to make sure they have a nutritious meal at school.
Aside from the taste testing, students got to hop in bounce houses and enter prize giveaways while their parents got to engage at tables with local community resources.
“We just want to make sure that our children in Berkeley County know we love them,” Smith said. “We want to always make sure that we hear them, understand them and do the best that we can for them nutritionally.”
Smith says this year ended up going even better than expected because of the hard-working child nutrition team.
