New Jersey leaders are pushing back against a federal decision to cut $26 million in funding for programs that provide fresh, locally sourced food to schools and food banks — a move they warn will harm both families and farmers.
President Donald Trump’s administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture slashed two programs that gave more than $1 billion annually to help schools and food banks buy food from local farms nationwide, Reuters reported Tuesday.
As a result, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture will lose $9.9 million in funding for local food assistance and $16.2 million for school food programs in fiscal year 2025, Gov. Phil Murphy’s office said in a statement.
