Drew Brees-backed fast food franchise opening soon in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – A growing fast-food franchise backed by Saints legend Drew Brees is hoping to go big on the Mississippi Coast.

Matt Gallagher and his son, Zack, were in Biloxi Thursday to oversee the dropping of their latest Smalls Sliders shipping container set to open near Edgewater Mall upon completion.

Nicknamed “The Can”, the 750-square-foot modular unit clad in the brand’s trademarked “Smorange” color scheme will house a drive-thru/walk-up restaurant specializing in cheeseburger sliders, seasoned waffle fries, and milkshakes.

The Gallaghers spoke with WLOX about Smalls’ big appeal with customers.

“Well, our goal is to provide a great experience,” said Matt. “Good quality, food, consistency, speed of service.”

“We serve cheeseburger sliders but at the end of the day, we want to put a smile on every guest who comes through the building,” added Zack. “Send them home with a good experience.”

Drew Brees is an investor in Smalls Sliders, which currently has 24 locations in the U.S. — including two already owned by the Gallaghers located in Flowood and Pensacola, Fla.

Matt Gallagher says the connection to the Coast will be felt long before the first slider is sold.

“We are looking forward to coming to the city of Biloxi,” he explained. “[We’re] probably going to look to hire about 60 employees. We are excited to be a part of this community.”

A key part of that connection includes recognizing local nonprofit “Embrace Abilities” as a Smalls Town Hero, a recognition given by Smalls Sliders to honor remarkable contributions within the community.

EA founder Bridgett Lee spoke about her mission to empower children and teens with special needs.

“I hope to really put a spotlight on us and maybe get the word out that we are a free resource in the community for families that do not know about us,” stated Lee. “It gives us a chance to spotlight us. In ten months we’ve registered 102 families, so I think that it really speaks to the need for this community.”

While no date has been set, the Gallaghers plan to open Smalls Sliders-Biloxi soon, weather permitting.
