MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports is looking for volunteers to help children with disabilities learn to ride a bike.
It is in preparation for their growing tradition of taking part in the iCan Bike Camp in July.
Volunteers would help those with physical or cognitive disabilities graduate from training wheels to a traditional two-wheeled bike.
Marketing director Derek Hackett said each volunteer will pair up with a rider while they walk or jog alongside them throughout the week-long program.
He said volunteers don’t have to commit to coming every day, but it’s encouraged to be paired with the same child for the week.
“You get to be a part of their journey from maybe barely being able to get that bike going at first to self-starting on a two-wheeled bicycle,” said Hackett.
Hackett said this volunteer opportunity requires those who are capable to run and walk a few miles indoors and outdoors.
There will be other volunteer options at the event that don’t require physical activity, like the check-in desk.
The camp runs from July 14-18 at the Minot Family YMCA.
You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer.
