Ky. family seeking support for three kids orphaned by murder-suicide

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – It was in February when Kentucky State Police said Heather Baldwin and Dennis Perry were shot and killed by Baldwin’s estranged husband, Spencer Baldwin, in Lincoln County.

Spencer then turned the gun on himself.

Now, Heather’s family is taking the time to share who she was.

“She was an amazing, smart child. Always asking questions, always wanting to learn,” said Heather’s stepdad Luke Pearson.

Its memories like this Pearson said he’ll carry with him forever.

“She was always around for the rights of anybody that maybe couldn’t speak up for themselves or anything like that,” he said.

He said these qualities Heather had are living on through her and Spencer’s three children, who are eight, six, and three-years-old.

“We’ve been able to kind of tell them, ‘hey, that’s something your dad would’ve done,’ or, ‘that’s something your mom would’ve done,’” Pearson added.

Pearson and Heather’s mom have become the kids’ sole caretakers; a task they never anticipated, but one they’re taking on with grace.

“Living here and continuing to raise them is a big change for all of us, but we have tried to normalize everything as much as we can. That’s what Heather would’ve wanted, Pearson said.

With this new normal for the Pearson family and the expenses that come with raising three kids, a GoFundMe has been set up to help.

“Kids need braces, kids fall and have to go to the hospital. Anything they would need or want. Not only to make the transition as good as it can be, but to just give them the best life that we can,” he said.

He said in the meantime, they’ll be working to ensure the kids know who their parents are beyond this tragedy.

“Talking about them, obviously keeping pictures around and that kind of thing is the biggest thing we can do to keep their memory alive,” Pearson said.
