
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team fought valiantly but fell in the 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinals to top-seeded FGCU, 63-47, on Tuesday night inside Alico Arena.
EKU (21-12, 10-8 ASUN) will place a cap on its championship hopes for the 2024-25 season having consecutive 20-win seasons and consecutive trips to the conference tournament semifinals game. The Colonels will wait for results around the country to finalize and see if their season will continue with any national postseason tournament invitations.
Fifth year guard Alice Recanati ends her final year in the maroon and white scoring seven points for the Colonels against FGCU. Since her arrival in 2020, the future EKU Hall of Fame honoree has surpassed 1,500 career points, 600 career assists, 500 career rebounds, and 200 career steals. She is top 25 in NCAA DI women’s basketball history in career minutes played, first in EKU history in assists, minutes, games played, games started, and is top 15 in school history in nearly eight other categories.
Fifth year guard Althea Kara Angeles led the Colonels on Thursday with 12 points going 4-for-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three. Upperclassmen Kaitlyn Costner scored eight points, Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor scored seven, and Raphaela Toussaint added four points and 12 rebounds. All five Colonels will be departing the program at the end of this school year.
EKU jumped out the gate and outscored FGCU, 20-7, in the first quarter. Despite the high-effort in the first, the Colonels were never able to record more than 10 points in a frame the rest of the way to fall, 63-47.
As a team, EKU shot 32 percent from the floor with five threes and 10 free throws. The Colonels brought down 35 rebounds, however, were forced into 18 turnovers and committed 25 personal fouls.
FGCU (29-3, 18-0 ASUN) had 22 points from ASUN Player of the Year Emani Jefferson and a 15-point, 13-rebound effort from forward Lauryn Taylor. The Eagles will advance to the ASUN Championship and face No. 2 seed Central Arkansas on March 15 back in Fort Myers.
