Auburn basketball’s Johni Broome named Sporting News National Player of the Year

The first national postseason award came Johni Broome’s way on Wednesday.

Auburn’s star forward was named Sporting News National Player of the Year, one of many national player of the year awards in college basketball. It comes after Broome was recently named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, both by the AP and the school’s coaches.

Broome averaged 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.4 blocks per game in the 2024-2025 season, helping lead Auburn to a 27-4 record and SEC regular season title. He also added 17 double-doubles throughout the campaign, playing the second-toughest schedule in the country, per KenPom.

Along with winning the Sporting News National Player of the Year award, he was also one of two unanimous selections to the publications All-American first team, alongside Duke’s Cooper Flagg.

Auburn will start the postseason Friday, facing either South Carolina, Arkansas or Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. Tipoff is scheduled for noon and the game will be televised on ESPN.
