0.2% tax reduction passes Michigan House Finance Committee

LANSING, Mich. (WLUC) – Republican Lawmakers in Lansing say they’re making an effort to put money back in your wallet.

A bill to decrease taxes passed the House Finance Committee Tuesday.

It would reduce the state income tax from 4.25% to 4.05%.

Proponents say the bill would put money in the pockets of Michiganders and small business owners.

On average, legislators say the bill would give $140 back to Michigan residents.

But the bill was not without opposition.

“I would say keep that money to pay for a road that might not otherwise get fixed,” Rep. Kelly Breen (D-21st State House District said. “Are we just going to be offsetting costs so that maybe somebody has to pay for a car repair because a road doesn’t get fixed?”

But proponents say it’s the taxpayer’s money and should be given back to them.

“The governor’s proposed budget is a billion more than last year,” Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-46th State House District) said. “If we look at what has been in the budget the past few years, 1,500 more state workers. We don’t need to grow state government, hip-hop academy, splash pads, you name it.”

The motion passed 9-3, with two abstentions.

The vote was along party lines, with Republicans in favor and Democrats against.

The bill now goes to the full House for a vote.
