WADESBORO, N.C. (WBTV) – A man accused of shooting into a vehicle with two kids inside in Anson County over the weekend also had enough fentanyl to kill more than 100,000 people, police said.
The shooting happened just before noon on Saturday, March 8 after a woman called Wadesboro police after she said she was being followed. The woman said she pulled into a CVS pharmacy parking lot on East Caswell Street when the person following her started shooting.
Police said multiple shots were fired into the woman’s vehicle, which had two adults and two children inside. Nobody was hurt by the bullets and the suspect got on Highway 74 and fled the scene.
Officers were able to get information on the suspect and obtained arrest warrants and a search warrant for a house on Cherry Street.
Wadesboro police officers searched the house and found 232 grams of fentanyl, which police said is enough to kill 116,000 people. To put that into perspective, there are only about 22,000 people in all of Anson County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
In additions to the fentanyl, police also found a little under a pound and a half of marijuana, a small amount of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Two guns, several magazines and a “large amount” of ammunition was also found. Officers said the ammunition found at the house matched that that was used in the shooting at the CVS.
As a result of the shooting and drug discovery, police arrested 28-year-old Bryant Dewitt Lemon Jr.
Lemon was charged with a long list of offenses, which included:
- Four counts of attempted first-degree murder
- Discharging a weapon into occupied property
- Felony conspiracy
- Go armed to the terror of the people
- Assault with a deadly weapon
- Various drug charges
Lemon had his bond set at $306,000 for the drugs charges only, but was denied bond for the shooting-related charges.
Four other people were also arrested in connection with the case. Two were charged with felony conspiracy related to the shooting, while the other two were charged with drug offenses.
Wadesboro police said everyone involved in the case turned themselves in by Monday, March 10.
Records showed that Lemon was booked into the Anson County Jail.
