I was in the mood for some BBQ, and as I walked past BBQ House on Newport Ave, their menu outside caught my eye. The Rice Bowl immediately stood out, and I was honestly surprised I’d never thought to try it before as it’s exactly the kind of thing I love. I guess I’d always been sidetracked by their Sloppy Joe sandwiches, Pulled Pork burritos, and… well, too many other tempting options to list. But this time, I knew I had to give the Rice Bowl a shot.
It comes with a choice of brisket, pulled pork, grilled chicken, or ham, all served over steamed rice and baked beans, then topped with coleslaw and a choice of mild or spicy BBQ sauce. The combination sounded hearty and satisfying, with a great mix of textures and flavors. I decided on the spicy pulled pork, and from the very first bite, I knew I had made the right choice.
The pork was incredibly tender, smoky, and packed with bold flavor. The spicy BBQ sauce had just the right amount of heat yet not overpowering, but enough to give it a nice kick. As I dug in, the sauce and juices from the pulled pork that seeped into the rice and beans, it tied everything together. Each bite was packed with greatness that made it hard to put my fork down.
The coleslaw on top added a fresh, crisp contrast to the warm, smoky elements of the dish. At first, I instinctively mixed some of the coleslaw into the bowl, thinking it would blend well with the pork, rice, and beans. But after a few bites, I realized I actually preferred eating it separately as a stand alone item as it gave me a refreshing break between bites of the rich, flavorful BBQ. I’m glad I experimented because it made the meal even more enjoyable.
Overall, the Rice Bowl was an absolute winner. It had everything I love about BBQ in one comfort style dish. It has earned a spot in my regular rotation.
