BOYNE CITY — For the third year, the Boyne City and Petoskey high school culinary arts programs faced off in a duel for the ages: Food Truck Wars.
Each year, the students from the competing high schools get an introduction to food truck culture and create their own themes and dishes for the competition. Each “truck” served sample plates of their meals, including one savory and one sweet option.
Cole Thornton, the Boyne City High School Culinary Arts teacher, told the News-Review the annual competition is a great chance to let students get creative and test their own dishes.
Thornton said he liked the event because the students choose what they’re cooking and develop their own themes and concepts.
Some community members were invited to attend the event and vote on their favorite dishes. Next year, the schools hope to find a bigger venue for the annual competition.
“Every year this keeps getting bigger,” Thornton said. “The turnout was amazing. We had so many local businesspeople and parents, the turnout was just awesome.”
Thornton said they practice work-based learning, meaning the students are getting some hands-on experience actually cooking the meals themselves. He said they work on restaurant-level cooking practices, and the Food Truck Wars are a great example of that work.
“This is the best example of it,” he said. “They’re cooking food, and serving it, and they’re getting guest interactions. It’s all the skills they would use if they were actually running a food truck or restaurant.”
Boyne City won the competition, with “The Striped Panini” taking home the top prize, serving a chicken panini, tomato basil soup and a chocolate mousse.
Other food trucks included the second place team, “The Wurst,” which offered a currywurst recipe, and the third place “Thai Guys,” which had curry noodles for people to try. “Sushiology” offered sushi rolls, while “Border Bites” had shrimp tacos and “Sumo Ramen” had chicken ramen.
