Utah Food Bank’s ‘Feed Utah’ event helps families fight hunger

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah families fighting hunger don’t have to face it alone. There’s an event coming up called “Feed Utah.”

One in eight people in Utah are facing hunger. One in six of them are children, according to Feed America. That’s why Utah Food Bank is launching “Feed Utah” — its largest food drive — on Mar. 15.

“Families really have struggled over the years and inflation is really starting to kick in,” Ginette Botte, president and CEO of Utah Food Bank, said.

She invites the community to get involved.

Look for these door hangers at your home starting on Monday, Mar. 10.

“It gives you instructions, it gives you options whether you want to do a financial donation or purchase food,” Botte said.

You can fill up a bag with food donations and leave it outside your home.

“Think about kid-friendly foods. Pop top cans, think about box meals, canned fruits and veggies,” Botte said.

Volunteers will pick it up on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 9 a.m.

From there, they’ll deliver it to pantries where it will be distributed to those who need it.

“So, it’s really hard for families who have a fixed budget to have money left for food,” Botte said. “Do they choose to pay for rent? Do they choose to pay the power bill so they have heat?”

Botte is also encouraging people to donate money as well. Every dollar will be matched up to $65,000. These acts of kindness will go a long way.

“If you can’t donate, we recognize that not everyone can at this time,” said Bott. “But at some point in the future please help us or help your neighbors.”
