Hawaii sports broadcasting legend Bobby Curran dies

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Bobby Curran, one of the legendary voices of Rainbow athletics, died Sunday.

Curran hosted “The Bobby Curran Show” on ESPN Honolulu and called more than 400 broadcasts in 32 seasons of covering University of Hawaii football, the longest in program history.

ESPN Honolulu took to social media and said: “With heavy hearts, we share the passing of longtime ESPN Honolulu broadcaster Bobby Curran. His voice, passion, and dedication to local sports left an unforgettable mark on our community. Bobby’s impact will never be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire.”

In addition to UH football, Curran has called games for basketball, baseball and women’s volleyball throughout the last three decades.

In a statement, UH Athletics said that Curran “was a storyteller and magician behind the microphone.”

“His smooth colorful voice was synonymous with UH football and basketball,” UH Athletics said. “Bobby was so much more than just a voice. He was respected by the players and coaches and most importantly, beloved by his listeners, the fans. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Jo and sons Max and Finn, and the entire Curran ‘ohana. Mahalo Bobby, may you rest in aloha.”

Curran was inducted into the UH Sports Circle of Honor in 2023. He was also named Hawaii Sportscaster of the Year six times by the National Sports Media Association.

He retired from sports broadcasting in November 2022 after needing a double lung transplant to treat an aggressive form of emphysema.

Curran returned courtside in 2023, and called his final UH basketball game in 2024.

He is survived by his wife, Jo, and two sons, Max and Fin.
