Doom: The Dark Ages Will Feature Brand-New Guns Made “From Scratch”

The creators of the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages, Game Director Hugo Martin and Producer Marty Stratton, recently discussed the game’s weapons and how they differ from the armory of the previous franchise installments.

One of the most noticeable guns shown in the trailers and in-game shots is the one with a recognizable design featuring a skull. Director Hugo Martin commented on its creation and explained its features (via PC Gamer): “That gun started out as the Bonecrusher, and then I think, through conceptual development, became the Skullcrusher. It does exactly what you think it does. It’s kind of a spread minigun that you could also turn into a long-range minigun.”

The Director compared the new weapon to a classic chain gun. However, it works at a smaller distance than the previous ones at the game’s disposal but at the same time, features an enhanced rate of fire and movement speed boost: “You’ll get a speed boost, and the rate of fire will increase,” Hugo Martin said. “So it gives you an advantage with movement, but you need it because it’s not very long range.”

Martin recalled the famous ED-209 scene from the Robocop movie and said that with “the falters, the incredible animations, the physics, the sound design, the blood squibs” the developers created the gore system reminiscent of the said movie scene: “At this point, it’s destructible demons version three, from 2016 to Eternal to now. We’ve got, I’d like to think, the best gore in the industry. Our gore system is really where we spend a lot of money.”
