Brazos Valley Food Bank looking for spring break volunteers

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – As many local school districts and universities take some time off for spring break, work at the Brazos Valley Food Bank remains as important as ever.

For some families, spring break means missing out on a week of reliable meals that their kids receive at school for free.

“That’s an extra cost for families. It’s going to be stressful for families,” explained Theresa Mangapora, the food bank’s executive director. “The kiddos… They can’t really do anything about it except just look to mom and dad.”

To help hold families over during during the break, the food bank is offering extra resources to recipients of its Children’s BackPack Program. It provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare food for low-income children to take home on weekends. Over spring break, these children will get two backpacks filled with this food.

“It’s not going to fill the void from the school meals, but it’s something,” Mangapora offered. “It’s a good stopgap.”

The Food Bank also supplies resources to food pantries throughout the Brazos Valley. Mangapora told KBTX these locations will be open over the break as another resource for families.

“A lot of them have fresh produce, a lot of them have frozen meat,” she shared. “It’s not all canned goods.”

Mangapora explained how spring break also means many of the food bank’s usual volunteers will be on vacation.

“Next week, it might be empty at the food bank, but we still need to do what we need to do,” added Mangapora. “We need to get the backpacks ready for the next week and we need to have the food sorted to go to the food pantries.”
