Food assistance, school funding, inmate service bills advance to senate

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – House lawmakers passed more bills on Tuesday that will head to the senate for approval.

HB432 establishes a fund for workforce rental housing projects for families or persons whose income sits at or below 140% of the area medium income.

HB428 would establish a program in which farm crops would be directly brought to food banks under the Hawaii Farm to Families program to help alleviate food shortages in the state.

The bill highlights that one in three families experience inconsistent, secure access to food and that more than 40% of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander households experience this.

HB429 would appropriate funds to hire more public preschool teachers and assistants. It would also help expand free public preschool access to alleviate working parents who struggle to afford childcare expenses.

HB433 would appropriate funds that would connect inmates with services to help their rehabilitation paths back into the community.

Mental health treatment, temporary clean and sober housing, and substance abuse treatment are among service programs that would be funded.

HB431 HD2 would establish more funding toward creating more kauhale homeless villages. Hawaii has the highest homelessness rate per capita in the nation and has opened several kauhale in recent years.

Finally,SB1100 proposes to rename the Department of Agriculture as the “Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity,” allowing the state to take action against the spread of pests or prohibited organisms.
