Grand Central Mall Stock Car show is spreading history about racing

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – The West Virginia Racing Heritage Festival is a non-profit organization that shares the history of racing. Ashley Ness, President of the Heritage Festival, says being able to keep the spirit alive and educate the younger generation on the track and cars is worth a million dollars.

“If anything in the world, there’s no pay involved in what’s going on. We’re a non-profit organization, but boy, I tell you what that’s worth $1,000,000 when you have one of those young kids come up and I sit in the car and I’ll tell you. It. He will tell you the history of the race car.” said Ness.

Seldon Wigal started racing in 1952 at 19 years old, then finished his career in 1967. He shares his memories of building everything from scratch and how racing used to be back in the day.

“The memory is probably my most exciting thing. Remember the times and back in those days we had to build everything. You couldn’t buy parts like you do today. And it was a trial and error situation, some worked and some didn’t.” said Wigal

Racing didn’t stop in ’67 though, his son followed in his footsteps racing, and then the racing gene was passed down to his grandson. Wigal thinks it is great racing has carried on through three generations.

“Oh, it’s good. The racing gets into your blood and it’s there and you, sometimes you, get a little waxed on it, but it’s always in your life.” said Wigal

The cars will be in the Grand Central Mall until Sunday March 9th.
