Cat food recalled over ‘bird flu’ risk, should be discarded ‘immediately’

UNDATED (WKRC) – A company’s cat food was recalled Saturday due to a “bird flu” risk.

According to the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Wild Coast LLC dba Wild Coast Raw of Olympia has voluntarily recalled its frozen “Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula” over a “possible bird flu health risk.”

“While no human infections have been identified among people handling raw pet food products, people can become infected if the virus gets into a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth. People should wash their hands and handling the raw product and sanitize contact surfaces such as countertops, refrigerators, bowls, or utensils. People who handled contaminated products should watch for symptoms of bird flu, including eye redness or irritation (conjunctivitis), cough, sore throat, sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, muscle/body aches, headaches, fatigue, fever, trouble breathing, seizures, rash, diarrhea, nausea, and/or vomiting. People exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare provider and local health department,” FDA officials wrote.

The FDA said 16oz and 24 oz products were distributed to pet retailers in Oregon and Washington State. Affected lot codes are as follows:

Symptoms of bird flu in pets include the following, per the agency:

  • Low appetite
  • Reddened or inflamed eyes
  • Discharge from the eyes and nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Neurological signs like tremors
  • Stiff body movements
  • Lack of coordination

Those who have purchased any of the affected products were asked to “immediately and securely discard” them and contact the place of purchase for a full refund.
