The city of Northport is just months away from opening its highly anticipated River Run Park.
The 36-acre, $27 million sports complex, featuring baseball and softball fields, is set to open Aug. 16.
River Run Park, built on Oliver Dam Road, will feature nine baseball and softball fields for use by local leagues and tournament play with teams from outside the area. There will be two championship fields that will support play up to the collegiate softball level.
“This isn’t just about building fields and courts, it is about creating a place where our community comes together, where our kids can grow and where everyone in Northport can be proud to call their own,” Christy Bobo, Northport City Council president, said in a news release.
River Run Park is part of the city’s 300-acre Northport Shore development, which will also include volleyball, pickleball and basketball courts, as well as cheer and dance spaces, the release states.
Northport city leaders say they expect River Run Park to make a huge economic impact.
The space is projected to welcome 530,000 visitors per year and generate an estimated $68 million in annual revenue, the release states.
In building River Run Park, Northport used 140,000 cubic yards of stockpiled dirt purchased at a reduced rate from Tuscaloosa’s McWright’s Ferry Road extension project.
