What happened to the news coverage of the downtown car show,
held during this year’s Steamboat Days?
This was probably the biggest car show that Winona has ever
had.
Jim Remlinger has been involved in this car show for the past three
years. He has been instrumental in taking a previous car show of
about 35 cars, to this year’s number of 300, according to the Daily
News. The majority of these cars were from local people who
completed most of the work themselves. There were about 14 vintage
super stock race cars. These were all actual cars, not clones.
These cars came from as far away as Florida and some from
Minnesota. Some of these cars run 0 to 200-plus mph in about 5
seconds, from a standing start. There were cars that belonged to
Richard Petty’s race team. There was also a Fastenal-sponsored car
driven by Carl Edwards. The net worth of these cars is in the
millions of dollars, as they are not replaceable.

The Winona Daily News never said a word about these famous
cars.
Jim has made this free show available to everyone wanting to
attend. Thanks to the city of Winona and many sponsors, volunteers
and donors that helped make this possible.
The only two pictures in the paper were black and white. It’s kind
of a coincidence that Dan Johnson’s car was black. (Saved on
colored ink.) If you looked at Sunday’s front page, you saw Mike
Kennedy riding a bike.
Good for Mike.
Don’t you think that could have been in the paper another time? If
you looked at the Connections section of the paper, the whole front
page was about summer in Lake City with five color pictures. This
goes on all summer long. Why did you place this on this particular
Sunday, during Steamboat Days?
For all the many people that came and participated in the best show
that Winona has ever had. Thank you for your support.
Doesn’t our paper have qualified reporters that can give the
coverage that Winona deserves?
Editor’s note: The Winona Daily News covered the car show as
Mr. Antoff mentioned. It appeared on Page A3 of the Sunday edition,
complete with a story and two photos. It was part of the ongoing
Steamboat Days coverage which had Daily News staff write six
stories during the course of five days. The schedule was run in
full for three days, as was the parade lineup. The Daily News
published 11 photos of the event throughout the week. Online there
were photo galleries with more than 50 pictures.
