SARASOTA, Fla. — Three weeks after a hit-and-run crash left two young children dead and their mother in critical condition, the driver said to be behind the wheel at the time has been arrested.
Sarasota police said Monday night they arrested 72-year-old June Fenton, charging her with two counts of leaving the scene of a traffic crash resulting in a fatality and leaving the scene of a traffic crash resulting in serious injury.
The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 on U.S. 301 near 7th Street.
Taeler Joy Bennett, 29, and her two kids, ages 5 months and 2 years old, were crossing the street when Fenton reportedly hit them with the Lexus she was driving and didn’t stop.
As a result of the crash, the 5-month-old and 2-year-old died. Bennett was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
“The driver of the Lexus fled the scene, failing to render aid or contact 911,” police said in a Facebook post.
After what they called a “thorough” investigation, the suspected car and its driver were found within days of the crash.
A search warrant allowed investigators to inspect the car and confirm evidence collected at the crash site matched the Lexus.
Throughout the investigation, police said Fenton “cooperated fully” with investigators.
Then, on March 3, investigators said they established probable cause to arrest Fenton on the above charges.
Fenton was taken into custody and booked into the Sarasota County Jail.
”We appreciate the patience and support shown by the community during this investigation. This incident has deeply impacted the lives of many. Like all investigations, this case highlights the importance of teamwork, patience, and trust within our community,” Chief Rex Troche said in a statement.
