Local teams compete in first Adapted Sports League Floor Hockey invitational.

WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) — It was a full house at West Salem’s Features Fieldhouse Saturday for the area’s first Adaptive Sports League Floor Hockey Invitational.

The high school adaptive sports league gives athletic and recreational opportunities to students with disabilities.

Seven teams from around the state competed Saturday, including a number of local teams.

Those who organized Saturday’s invitational hope the event helps ASL expand to other districts, adding that the league gives kids more chances to thrive.

“Seeing them learn how to be resilient, how to overcome obstacles, self determination,” said Nicholas Stusser, Holmen High School’s ASL head coach. “They develop friendships, social skills, you name it — all the life skills that come with regular education sports as well, they all get that.”

Saturday’s invitational was not a tournament, so no team was crowned the champion.

Instead, every team received a unique award for their achievements, like “Best Sportsmanship” or “Most Grit.”

Local teams competing were the Black River Falls School District, the Holmen School District, the La Crosse School District, the Onalaska School District and the West Salem School District.
