PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A family in northeast Portland lost their home and several pets to a fire on Friday night, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.
Just after 11:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a house at Northeast 108th Avenue and Knott Street. PF&R said three adults and five children, along with the family’s dog, were able to get out of the house unhurt. However, one cat and several kittens died in the fire.
Scott Haas lives next door, and said the fire damaged his house as well.
“As I passed the kitchen, I saw just a wall of flames outside my kitchen window,” Haas said.
Haas said he stayed up late Friday night to read, then heard a strange noise coming from outside.
“It actually sounded like someone was breaking into my car,” he said. “I heard banging and then I heard glass breaking.”

When Haas got up to investigate, he discovered the flames had burned through the fence between the two houses, melted his outdoor security camera and shattered his kitchen window.
“I was a little bit panicked because I thought for sure it was going to catch the back of my house on fire,” Haas said.
After he called 911, Haas and his wife quickly gathered a few important belongings and then evacuated their home. Thanks to a quick response from PF&R, Haas said crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to his house.
Haas said he was glad to see that his neighbors were all able to escape the fire uninjured.
“Everybody got out of the house okay,” he said. “That was my biggest concern.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
According to PF&R, the Red Cross was called in to help the displaced family.
