Kim’s Krew food pantry back open after hurricane damage

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – Kim’s Krew, a Manatee County food pantry is getting back into its groove after Hurricane Milton shut it down for three months.

The charity differentiates itself from other food pantries in the county because it solely offers delivery services, bringing necessities to local residents who may be unable to go to a pantry themselves because of medical issues, lack of access to transportation, and more.

After the storm hit, Kim’s Krew leaders say they had to decide whether to rebuild or restart, but after collecting $50,000 support through grants, they were able to get a new site up and running.

Before the storm, the charity served about 100 families and 275 people per month on average. The closure forced them to look elsewhere for support.

Vice president and pantry manager Jim Comkowycz says since re-opening, they’ve reconnected with the people they served before. He says their stories paint a rough picture of survival since the storm.

“We’ve been specifically asking if they’ve been able to find any food and stay healthy and they say they’ve been living on ramen noodles for days or for weeks or they say they haven’t been eating,” Comkowycz said.
