“Give Kids a Smile Day” at SIU Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) – Students in SIU Carbondale’s Dental Hygiene Program gave local children a smile with free dental care.

“Give Kids a Smile Day” offers free cleanings and other dental care to children between the ages of 1 and 16.

These exams fulfill the State of Illinois’ required school dental exam.

The event is an opportunity for the program to support the community, and a real life learning experience for the students.

“I personally love it just cause we get to help out in the community, and so it’s really nice,” Senior Dental Student Paulina Reynseo said.

“It means a lot to us just because we get to reach a ton of community members,” Senior Dental Student Paola Garcia said.

“I really have found that I do enjoy working with kids, so that was something that I gained from this, and just being able to give back,” Senior Dental Student Abbey Sodergren said.

The next event will be with the Special Olympics Special Smiles in Herrin on April 25.
