Food insecurity continues to be a critical issue globally, nationally, and locally — affecting the lives of many. At Stony Brook University, our caring community actively works to address this need by helping stock the shelves of our campus Food Pantry.
For the second consecutive year, the Finance & Administration Division supported the Food Pantry Adopt-a-Week campaign during Valentine’s Day week, challenging colleagues to “DARE to CARE” and spread love by addressing food disparities on campus. SBU Seawolves responded enthusiastically, collecting 836.58 pounds of food donations this year — an increase of 136.58 pounds (19.5%) compared to last year’s 700 pounds.
Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration Jed Shivers stated, “I am incredibly inspired by the way our Finance & Administration teammates came together to support the Food Pantry Adopt-a-Week campaign. Their enthusiasm and dedication were evident in the record-breaking amount of donations collected. It is heartwarming to see how our team members worked together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff. I am so proud of their efforts and grateful for their unwavering commitment to our community.”
The impact of these efforts are beyond significant. During the fall 2024 semester alone, the Stony Brook University Food Pantry served more than 4,000 students — a 100% increase from the combined total of the previous fall and spring semesters. This dramatic rise highlights the growing concern of food insecurity within our campus community.
“We are so thankful to the F&A division. Thank you again for such an amazing donation—you have truly made an impact on our student population,” said Kathryn McCombs, SBU Food Pantry representative.
Stony Brook University continues to build momentum, leading through changing tides with care and compassion. DARE TO IMPACT our campus community and consider adopting a week at the SBU Food Pantry.
Special thanks to the following F&A teammates who helped make the drive a success!
Karla Morrison, Lauren Candela, Joseph Caponegro, Jennifer Coggin, Jhovanna Erazo, Diane Brady, Kristine Kondrick, Heather McLaughlin, Jeanmarie Ricciardi, Erik Andersen, Sara Sangiorgio and of course our Divisional leaders who lent their support Lyle Gomes, Heather Montague, Simeon Ananou, Bill Herrmann, Larry Zacarese, and Jen Donnelly.
