Our last couple of Down on the Street articles featured JDM trucks in Shiga Prefecture and a Soviet sedan in Colorado. This time, we’ll stay in Denver but we’re going to get about as American as it’s possible to be: a big, snazzy hardtop sedan from the heyday of Chrysler’s now-defunct entry-level brand.
The Plymouth VIP was the top trim level for the C-Body Fury for the 1966 through 1969 model years, offering a car nearly as swanky as its Chrysler Newport or Dodge Monaco siblings for a bargain price. The MSRP for the 1968 VIP hardtop sedan was $3,300, or about $30,742 in 2025 dollars. That’s a steal for a 3,700-pound luxury hardtop sedan with a V8 engine and acres of cloth-and-vinyl comfort inside (however, you had to pay $227 extra to get an automatic transmission instead of the base three-on-the-tree manual).
