Opinion: These Pokémon deserve Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Mega Evolution was the first major battle gimmick, introduced back in Generation 6, and it’s still looked back upon fondly by fans. It was cool to see some of our favourite Pokémon get brand new forms and become even more powerful in battle, so it’s a big win to see it return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. After the latest trailer showcased several of the ‘mons that already had Mega forms, it whetted our appetite for some new ones.

We’ve picked out a bunch of Pokémon that we think would suit brand-new Mega Evolutions perfectly.

Meganium, Feraligatr, and Emboar

The latest Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer showed off the three starter Pokémon for this game, Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig, so it’d make perfect sense for their final forms to get Mega Evolutions that we can access mid-way through the story. In Legends: Arceus, the three starter Pokémon got new regional forms, but since we’re yet to have any confirmation of regional forms existing in this game, we’d much rather these three starters get Megas instead.

Talonflame

Talonflame is one of the coolest looking bird Pokémon out there, and as Kalos’ regional bird, it’s worthy of the Mega treatment. There is so much potential in turning this sleek but simple bird design into something raging with flames. In Gen 6 competitive, it was a big threat thanks to its speed, so leaning into that with something like the Speed Boost ability would be amazing.

Flygon

When it was revealed that Gen 3 remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire would feature Mega Evolution, the biggest request from fans was for Mega Flygon – a great Pokémon that often gets overlooked when standing alongside other powerful Gen 3 Pokémon like Salamence and Metagross. Unfortunately, the cries from fans went ignored, and Mega Flygon never happened, but Z-A is a chance for redemption.

Hawlucha

Gen 6 had the smallest roster of new Pokémon in history, so Z-A should make the most of Kalos’ limited roster by beefing it up with new Mega forms. As a Pokémon that doesn’t evolve, Hawlucha is the perfect candidate as its Luchadore aesthetic offers so much creative potential for a muscle-bound, high-flying attacker.

There isn’t any complicated reasoning behind this one. Luxray is just a cool-looking Pokémon, and I want to see what it looks like when it gets even more powerful.

Meowstic

Another Gen 6 Pokémon that has gone underappreciated over the years, Meowstic is a cute-looking Psychic type that is backed up with some slightly disturbing lore about its powerful mental capabilities. With this Pokémon looking different depending on gender, it would be a fun opportunity for a Mega Evolution to blend the two designs or perhaps even give both forms distinct designs with slightly different abilities – like how Mewtwo and Charizard got two different Megas.

Tinkaton

When picking a Pokémon out of the Gen 9 roster that deserves a Mega, Tinkaton is simply the only worthy choice. This powerful hammer-wielding cutey is easily one of the best Gen 9 Pokémon, and it would be amazing to see what it could do with an even bigger hammer and bigger muscles with which to crash it down on someone.

Kingdra

While Kingdra was once a pretty powerful Pokémon, the years haven’t been kind to it, and the seven generations that followed its introduction left it pretty outclassed in battle despite having an awesome design. Z-A has the opportunity to turn things around for Kingdra with a Mega form that could bring it back into the fray as a powerful competitor.

Aegislash

One of the most popular Gen 6 Pokémon, I can’t honestly imagine what Mega Aegislash would look like, but that’s exactly why I want to see it. It was already a powerful Pokémon, but getting a Mega Evolution would make it even more worthwhile investing in them as a partner, especially with Z-A overhauling the combat system.

Mimikyu

Few Pokémon have experienced the instant love from the fanbase that Mimikyu did when it was first revealed, and now that we’re a few generations down the line, it’s time for it to take the spotlight again. The lore is right there to make a cool Mega, as there is supposedly some terrifying creature under the crudely-drawn Pikachu sheets, and a new form that shows pitch-black claws reaching out from under a sheet that is starting to tear away would be an amazing design.
