ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – The ECISD Career and Technical Education program’s Frost Tech Car Show is back Saturday, March 1 for its 7th year.
This annual car show is a fundraiser for ECISD’S CTE programs.
“Sometimes we have skills U.S.A. contests, some of the students can’t afford to maybe pay the entry fee and stuff, we can use that money for that. Sometimes if we run out of something, run out of budget in the year we can use it to buy something extra to finish somebody’s project or finish what we’re working on,” said Mark Vaught, the Collision Technology Instructor for Ector County ISD.
The body shop program teaches students how to repair cars, from fixing dents to repainting them.
The goal is to prepare them to work in a real body shop by using the same equipment and techniques.
The program has about 50 students this year ranging from first year to third year levels.
Vaught has been teaching this course for the past 27 years and sees the demand for this job in the Midland-Odessa area.
“You can talk to any of the body shops, they’re all tripling in size and they’re all begging for people to come to work. I’ve got several of the shops in town that come looking every year for employees,” Vaught said.
This year’s car show runs from 9 to 2, at 104 South Grandview.
Spectators receive free entry and it’s a $25 dollar fee to enter a car into the show.
“Right now it’s considered a pretty good show. It’s one of the first ones of the season, so a lot of people show up and a lot of them like to have it here,” said Vaught.
They expect to have up to 85 cars at the show this year.
“If you like cars, different kind of cars. Hot rods, street rods, even the newer cars show up. Just come on out, have fun,” Vaught said.
The top 10 cars, best paint, best engine and student choice all receive handmade trophies made by the students using spare car parts and their creativity.
