CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – More than 30 schools and organizations, including several in Charlottesville, will participate in the 14th annual School Food Drive benefiting the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The initiative, running from March 3 to March 21, will extend into the Shenandoah Valley for the first time.
Local students Lily Stendig of Albemarle High School and Sofia Smith of Tandem Friends School are leading this year’s efforts. Last year’s drive provided more than 5,000 meals, and organizers hope to surpass that total in 2025. “Young people throughout the area will demonstrate a real impact from our collective efforts,” Stendig said.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and its 217 partner organizations serve more than 68,000 people each month. Livia Marrs, volunteer and food drive manager, emphasized the growing need: “Costs of food, housing, and childcare continue to soar, and across our area, we are seeing more need—a lot more—so this drive could not come at a better time.”
Since its inception in 2011, the School Food Drive has collected over 101,000 pounds of food—equivalent to nearly 84,000 meals.
