Aiken State Park welcomes new attraction – a trail for kids

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Aiken State Park is opening up a new attraction for kids of all ages.

On Thursday, park rangers held a ribbon-cutting to unveil the new kids’ trail.

“Track Trails” is a self-guided trail specifically designed for kids and their families.

We spoke with Park Manager Kelly Howell to get an inside look at the new adventure.

The trail allows you to discover and explore the park’s history and ecology and Howell is excited for families to come and hike one of the four new track trails.

“It’s getting kids outside,” said Howell. “It’s allowing them to do something that they don’t normally get to do. It’s good for the community because we have so many outdoor recreational areas, but this is something specifically they can go to Aiken State Park and do, and they can learn some history on the park as well. “

There is a kiosk out by the children’s pond that will map out each of the four excursions at Aiken State Park, but the adventure doesn’t have to stop there.

“Scanning the qr code, its got an app that lets you keep up with all the activities and all types of things and they can keep track of those online so when they go to other parks they can keep up with how many hours they have logged or how many adventures they have been on.”

Aiken is one of 300 parks that offer track trails in the United States through the Kids in Parks program.
