HONOLULU (Island News) — If this year seems harder than most to stay ahead financially, you are not alone.
”People are just getting squeezed and faced with these impossible choices,” said Hawaii Food Bank CEO Amy Miller. “Can you afford to put food on the table for your family or put gas in your car to go to work or buy medicine, pay your electric bill?”
Staff at the Hawaii Food Bank are constantly on the move as food insecurity is on the rise.
Staff at the Hawaii Food Bank are constantly on the move as food insecurity is on the rise. To help with that burden Airbnb stepped in with a $1 million donation.
”We’re serving about 13% more people right now than we did at the same time last year,” Miller said. “One in three families are food insecure in our state. 10% of households are going without food for whole days some or most months of the year. 6% of our keiki are going without food for whole days.”
To help with that burden, online vacation rental company Airbnb stepped in with a $1 million donation. Those funds will provide more than two million meals.
”We are so grateful to Airbnb for this contribution, which will be used across the state,” Miller said. “So we’ll support here Oahu Hawaii Food Bank, which serves Oahu and Kauai, the Maui Food Bank, which supports Maui County and the food basket on Hawaii Island.”
The Hawaii Food Bank provides fresh produce and non-perishable items to 170 thousand people on Oahu and Kauai, and nearly 300 thousand more statewide.
