Microsoft has announced that Playground Games’ upcoming revival of the Fable series has suffered a major delay, with the release date slipping from the previously announced 2025 to 2026.

The announcement was made via an official Xbox Game Studios podcast, where Head of Xbox Game Studios Craig Duncan revealed that Playground Games was going to be spending more time on the game to make it the best it can be.

“We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025,” Duncan says, “We are actually going to give Fable more time and it’s going to ship in 2026 now. While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait. And I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team.”

Duncan says that he’s played some of the game in its early state, and while he was cautious not to spoil anything about the game, he says it “felt amazing” to play. He says that the team at Playground Games are all massive fans of the original games, and that they’re working hard to make something that respects “the game tenets that are true to Fable” while still creating something modern and fresh.

Fable was first revealed to be in development back in 2018, when Eurogamer reported that Playground Games was working on a fourth installment in the series. The game was officially announced two years later, in July 2020, and was said to be somewhat of a reboot for the series. The first trailer for the game was released in 2023, and featured actor Richard Ayoade.

If Fable meets its new 2026 release window, it will have been over 15 years since the last main series title, Fable 3, which was released on Xbox 360 in 2010. The series, originally developed by Peter Molyneux’s Lionhead Studios, is an action RPG series that has been praised for its game design, witty humor and writing, and depth, with the heavy focus on the games’ morality systems that rewarded or punished players for specific actions being particularly praised by critics and fans alike.
