Sandy mom arrested for DUI and hit-and-run with kids in the car

SANDY — A 31-year-old mother is under arrest after allegedly driving drunk with her children in the car and crashing into a mailbox before fleeing the scene.

Sandy police identified the woman as Kerri Lynn Housley. She reportedly hit a mailbox Monday at approximately 6 p.m. and left the scene, only to return moments later with her car’s bumper dragging.

What made the situation even more alarming was what officers discovered when they caught up with her.

According to Sgt. Greg Moffitt with the Sandy City Police Department, Housley was intoxicated and had her three young children in the back seat. A field sobriety test revealed her blood alcohol level to be .291 — nearly six times the legal limit of .05 in Utah.

“We heard what kind of sounded like a crash,” said Rebecca Doyle, a neighbor who was home with her children at the time. “But I heard metal scraping.”

Doyle said her next-door neighbor rang her doorbell shortly after, and that’s when she realized what had happened outside — her mailbox lay in pieces.

According to the police report, Housley lives just a few doors down from Doyle and was on her way to a parent-teacher conference when the incident occurred. Officers also found a bottle of whiskey inside the vehicle.

Doyle expressed relief that no one was hurt, especially her children, who had considered playing outside earlier that day.

“I’m honestly grateful it wasn’t our kids out here,” Doyle said. “I had the thought earlier in the day — let’s go play with scooters in the front — I’m just glad we stayed inside.”

Housley was taken into custody and is now facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence and child endangerment.
