Westside Air Force JROTC packs millionth meal at food bank

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – After nearly a decade, a local student group reached an incredible milestone.

On Monday morning, the Westside Air Force JROTC packed its millionth meal at the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas. What a way to start the week.

The group started packing meals in 2017 and has carried the tradition through several cycles of students.

Outgoing Senior Group Commander William Arden White said he’s incredibly proud of his fellow students and looks forward to passing the torch to the next generation.

“It’s really cool because I believe it was two years ago we got to half a million (meals packed),” White said. “It’s cool to think that in two years, we doubled (that number). I just think it was really awesome we were able to accomplish that.”

Westside Air Force JROTC Instructor Peter Mamula shared that sentiment, saying he wants to instill a sense of pride in the students concerning community service.

He said the students enjoy it so much they look forward to visiting the food bank every month.

Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas Chief Development Officer Rebecca Hendrix called the students “a machine” and said she can always count on Westside.

The next generation of students has already set their eyes on the next goal: 2 million meals.
