SAN ANTONIO – A local charity is helping families celebrate Ramadan and conclude their fasts with healthy, delicious meals.
On Tuesday, Islamic Relief USA a religious nonprofit and advocacy organization, worked alongside the San Antonio Food Bank to deliver Ramadan Meal boxes to families in need across San Antonio.
The organization cites growing food insecurity amid the expiration of many COVID-era assistance programs, as well as the high price of groceries.
“The month of Ramadan is an opportunity for Muslims across the world to increase giving and empathy. It is a time to remember our neighbors who are struggling and have found themselves in vulnerable circumstances,” Islamic Relief USA said in a statement. “We are pleased to be collaborating with community-based organizations to provide assistance during this holy month.”
Boxes containing rice, dates, hooking oil, flour, pasta, and other items were distributed to families in need.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), about 13.5% of households in 2023 were considered food insecure, meaning they had difficulty providing food due to lack of resources.
