MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio – Harvest Sherwood Food Distributors has announced plans to shut down all locations across the country, including its Maple Heights warehouse, leaving 1,500 people without jobs nationwide, including 273 in Northeast Ohio.
Harvest Sherwood Food Distributors on Feb. 18 notified state workforce officials of the plan to shut down all operations next month at 16625 Granite Rd in Maple Heights.
Businesses are required to provide a 60-day notice to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services on pending closures but there are exceptions, including if filing a notice with the state may negatively impact the business.
Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to Harvest Sherwood Food Distributors for more information.
The company, a nationwide meat distributor, will pay workers through April 21, when its warehouse closes permanently, Karl Berger, Chief Executive Officer, said in the notice.
The Detroit-based company has announced nationwide closure resulting in layoffs across several states including Michigan, Oregon and Florida, according to notices filed in those states.
Sherwood services 8,000 customers including retailers, wholesalers, institutional accounts, food service accounts and cruise lines, according to the company’s website. The distributor ships over 20 million pounds of food products weekly on a fleet of over 250 trucks.
In April 2017, Sherwood Food Distributors merged with Harvest Food Distributors, a family-run business based in San Diego.
