Mingo County Schools provide food backpacks for those affected by recent flooding

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Volunteers have been working to fill up backpacks with food for those affected by the recent flooding in southern West Virginia. Mingo County Schools Superintendent Johnny Branch says this is how they are providing relief.

“What we are doing is what we are calling strategic relief aid and support. We want to make sure that the people who need the relief or who need the support the most, are getting it,” Branch said.

Community and schools workers lined up, filling up each backpack one-by-one to make sure families in Mingo County still get fed.

“That’s what’s really difficult right now because our kids they’re not here, and they’re not in school, we’re not serving them, their meals, their breakfast, their lunch, so we have to figure out ways to get the food to them,” Branch said.

The superintendent said putting together backpacks with food is just a little part of the Mingo County school’s motto, ‘taking care of the whole child,’ and he said this has been a team effort and all hands on deck to take care of the students.

“I so appreciate our employees just stepping up, and they are making it possible for us to fulfill our mission of taking care of our whole child, the wellness of our whole child,” Branch said.
