Lubbock community garden addresses food insecurity by providing fresh produce

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – In Lubbock County, over 52,000 people faced food insecurity in 2022, according to Feeding America.

A local initiative, the Roots Booker T. Washington Community Garden, is working to combat this issue by providing fresh produce to those in need.

Located in Chatman Hill, the garden was once an empty lot but has transformed into a vital resource for the community.

It supplies vegetables to volunteers, local food pantries, and churches, all while teaching residents the skills needed to grow their own food.

Jessica Tullar Caroom, a leader in the garden, emphasizes its importance.

“I hope they learn something that makes them want to come back, to be honest. We always, even our volunteers, try to make sure we send people home with whatever they want,” Caroom said.

For many families, the garden serves as a food source.

“The garden may have certain ingredients so I’m going to come here first,” volunteer Theresa Wilson said. “Whenever they have harvest day, we can pick certain things and know what we have.”

The garden is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and every other Saturday, located at 2324 21st St from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
