LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A new grocery store is open in Las Vegas with healthy food options for all, and much of the produce is grown in their own backyard.
The Obodo Collective nonprofit held a grand opening Saturday for the Green Grocer store — located in the Historic Westside, on the corner of Monroe and C Street.
“There is not a lot of places to get food in this area, especially quality, locally grown food,” said Tameka Henry, Executive Director of The Obodo Collective.
Henry says this in an underserved area in the middle of a food desert, and many neighbors don’t have access to fresh produce that is locally grown and locally sourced.
“We saw a lot of need around food insecure families,” said Henry. “So it was just important to be that bridge to resources for families to get access to food.”
The grocery store will be stocked with fresh produce from its urban farm and other local sources.
“We have spinach, yellow corn, we’re also growing cabbage here now, we have curly mustards, green onions,” said Henry, walking through the urban garden.
The new grocery store will help make fresh produce available for more than 720 households who live within a half mile from the store.
“It’s right here in your neighborhood, and you don’t have to travel far, so it was important for it to happen right now,” said Henry.
