LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – The bone-chilling temperatures of the past week had many East Texans looking to get in from out of the cold, and it strained the resources of an East Texas rescue mission.
Though the temperature is pleasant Saturday, the past week’s arctic freeze had numerous people seeking shelter at the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission locations in Tyler and Longview.
Mission Director Brian Livingston says during the cold blast, they experienced at least a 20 percent increase in traffic at the missions.
They needed to serve not only those who were housed at the facilities, but also those who sought it as a warming center. Everyone who came got a hot meal, so much so that the mission has depleted its food supplies and is in need of donations.
Livingston talks about how even as the numbers of those seeking help increased, they could not be turned away.
