PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) – Pueblo is putting more money towards making sure kids and parents can get to Haaf Elementary School safely.
This comes after the city received a Safe Routes to School grant from CDOT. This grant awards Pueblo $370,000 to install high visibility crosswalks, ADA curb ramps and build new sidewalks in front of Haaf Elementary School.
With this project, upgrades to the traffic signal and crosswalks at the Jerry Murphy Rd. and Chinook Ln. intersection could be made as well. Also, the sidewalks surrounding this intersection could be improved and a southbound right turn lane could be built.
Director of Public Works for the City of Pueblo Andrew Hayes tells 11 News, “It makes our communities more livable.”
Hayes continues, “It improves the quality life for folks. Another important piece is for folks that do want to walk to school it allows that to happen you don’t have to be dependent on driving to school or necessarily even catching a bus, if that’s applicable.
“So it’s a huge win for the community and that little neighborhood particularly is going to benefit from these improvements.”
Hayes says they plan to start construction in early summer after kids get out for school. They also hope to have construction wrapped-up by the time kids have to return to school in the fall.
Project consultants and Department of Public Works staff will present information for the project at a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Haaff Elementary School.
