MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Over 1800 students from across Mississippi gathered at the Evangel Temple this morning to see and hear the Meridian Symphony Orchestra at this year’s OrKIDstra.
Throughout Friday’s performance, kids were taught different instrument groups and how each one makes different sounds.
“Well, first of all, the most important reason is because so many of our schools don’t have it. Music is actually diminishing from our school systems and it really comes up to organizations like the Meridian Symphony and other arts organizations to continue to fill the gap. On top of that, developmentally, I mean, you’re speaking about leaps and bounds and test scores and demeanor in attendance. Everything in between is heavily affected by arts and especially music,” said Education Director for MSO Kayla Fuentes.
The Meridian Symphony Orchestra collaborated with a group of actors from Huntsville MET. These two groups told the story of “Peter and the Wolf.” Each character represented an instrument, and each time they would interact, the instrument would play.
“Well, our OrKIDstra 2025, “Peter and the Wolf,” is coming off to a great success, and I hope that each one of them takes home just the imagination that comes with what we’re creating today and the spark of music and love that they can go home and. With their parents and their loved ones. And hopefully, continue on throughout their day in weeks and months to come,” said Fuentes
Friday at six, a group of kids will create their own OrKIDstra and provide a free concert for their parents at the Evangel Temple.
