Hermon food pantry looking for new home

HERMON, Maine (WVII) — Hermon officials are going back on earlier approval to let a food pantry build a new facility on town property.

The owner of the Neighbors Supporting Neighbors Community Pantry says they are at risk of closing now if they don’t quickly find a new place to build.

The town council voted to withdraw their approval after they discovered a lease had never been signed.

They also were interested in using that site to relocate a radio tower, to the surprise of food pantry supporters.

“We were under the understanding that was a signed contract, and we were ready to build for free for the town of Hermon,” said Carol Lackedy, the director of Neighbors Supporting Neighbors Community Pantry.

“Do not take this vote this evening as a proverbial nail in the coffin or believing you have no support from this council,” Hermon Town Councilor Christopher Gray said.

Councilors have said they will help the food pantry find a more permanent solution.

In the meantime, supporters say they are not giving up, but are looking to the community for help finding a place to build.
