Cruising down Memory Lane with the Western Canadian National Car Show this August 2-3 in Brandon

What once was known as the Super Run, has been renamed to re-brand the largest car show in the Prairies; The Western Canadian Nationals Car Show and its coming to Brandon the first weekend in August.

This year’s show is expected to see up to 800 vintage vehicles travel to the Keystone Centre grounds August 2-3rd.

Show organizer, Dave Burba is also the president of the Road Rebels, the local car club that hosts the regular Thursday evening Cruise Night that takes place on Rosser Avenue in downtown Brandon from May to September.

He says the name of the big event, Super Run, didn’t resonate with car enthusiasts as well as they’d like it to. And they wanted to ensure car show lovers from across North America new what this show n’ shine was all about.  “It definitely helped to extend the reach of what we were doing,” explains Burba. “Once we got the name the Western Canada Nationals, it definitely drew some attention from people that we wouldn’t have got to before. So, what we see right now has definitely been a plus for us.”

The annual event was traditionally hosted between three provinces and three specific locations on a 3-year rotation:  Brandon, Saskatoon, SK and Red Deer Alberta.  Due to the pandemic, the Saskatchewan and Alberta car shows haven’t participated for a handful of years, and so of the past 3 events (2019, 2022 and now 2025) Brandon has taken the lead.  The show was coming to a screeching halt in 2023 when the other two provinces opted out, but the Manitoba crew kept the wheels turning to bring the event back to Brandon.

Burba says the show attracts vehicles from all corners of the country, including the U.S., everything from classic cars, vintage trucks, hot rods and everything in between.

“But the biggest thing I find is the stories behind the cars,” says Burba.

“If you see a car that you like, or anything else, you just start talking to the owner and they’ll tell you where they found the car, why they found the car, how they built it, and that’s the most interesting part of the whole event!”

About a dozen awards will be given to car owners/restorers including Best of Show, Best Hotrod, and best pre-World War.

Many aren’t so concerned about winning an award, they just love to share their craft.  But others have worked really hard to be the best in their category, and Burba and the awards are a great way to acknowledge the blood, sweat and tears that makes their vehicle stand out from everybody else.

The Young-Gun Award is for anyone under the age of 25 to give special recognition to that up-and-coming generation of car enthusiasts.  And the Throttle Queen category is for a woman-owned vehicle that she drives and maybe helped to restore.
