Education Department kick off Wednesday’s hearing
The Delaware Department of Education first presented an overview of its efforts, mission and intentions to committee members.
Led by Secretary Cynthia Marten, the department aims to provide quality education to First State students.
Marten first discussed current Gov. Matt Meyer’s priorities for education in the First State, including “improving student outcomes,” renovating the current education funding system, “workforce development” and additional support for teachers, according to the presentation.
Marten and her team then presented plans to improve early literacy across the state: to help all First State students read at grade level “by the end of third grade,” according to the presentation.

Department efforts include strengthening teacher professional development, creating additional resources for educators, families and state leaders and further investing in secondary literacy instruction.
The department also discussed additional initiatives that focus on workforce development, from state-sponsored career scholarships to teacher apprenticeships and paid residencies.
While Marten acknowledged progress has been made, she also recognizes the department “need[s] to do more” to help prepare and empower students for academic enrichment and success.
This is a developing story. Updates will be made throughout the day.
