SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – A woman in Shreveport is facing multiple counts of child desertion after reportedly leaving her five children alone for days at a time.
The Shreveport Police Department says an investigation was launched after officers were called about five young children being left at home by themselves.
On Feb. 15 around 11 a.m., officers were sent out to the house in the 5500 block of Virginia Avenue after a concerned family member called them, worried about Leanisha Broom and her kids. The family member said Broom was not answering her phone and couldn’t be found.
During the investigation, detectives learned Broom hadn’t been at work for two days, and had not been at the home with her children since Feb. 13. The oldest child, a 6-year-old, told officers their mom had stopped by briefly that morning to drop off a breakfast biscuit from McDonald’s before leaving again to go to work.
OTHER CRIME IN THE ARKLATEX
Police discovered Broom had an active bench warrant out for her on three counts of child desertion from back in 2023, and another count from back in 2021. The U.S. Marshals Office tried to arrest her on Feb. 13, but Broom couldn’t be found at the home.
Child Protective Services was notified of the situation and determined the kids will be put into the custody of a family member pending further investigation.
On Feb. 17, Broom was found and arrested. She now faces five new counts of child desertion for leaving her five children (ages 6, 4, 3, 1, and 5 months) home alone.
