EARLY YEARS: Mom and nutrition expert creates Kizingo Kids website to encourage healthy eating

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Dr. Kiyah Duffey has a PhD in Nutrition.

Perhaps more importantly, she’s a mom of three.

“When I had kids, I realized that all of these habits that we had as adults, when we have our children, and when they’re very young and beginning the process of eating, we have a real opportunity then to influence how and think and feel about food,” says Duffey.

After having her first baby, Duffey noticed there were few products on the market that promoted good healthy behaviors.

That’s when she founded the website, Kizingo Kids.

“To help our kids develop these long term healthy habits that conscientious, mindful healthy eaters, those develop over decades,” says Duffey.

Kizingo Kids offers advice on everything from meal planning to introducing new foods to kids, to making meals that are more flexible.

And she stresses healthy changes don’t just happen overnight.

“It doesn’t matter so much what happens tonight at dinner. Oh, I made broccoli and they didn’t eat it again. Really, what matters is what happens over the next 10 dinners and then the next 10 weeks, and then the next 10 years,” says Duffey.

Duffey will be teaching a series of six free classes, in partnership with Huddle Up Moms.

The first class is happening March 1 at The Haven on 5th in Roanoke at 2:00 pm. Click here to register.
