Daytona Beach police: Mom arrested for locking kids out of apartment, and unsafe living conditions

Daytona Beach police responded to the Carolina Club Apartment complex off Williamson Boulevard in Daytona Beach on Friday after reports that four children had been locked out of their home for five hours.The woman accused of locking them out is 34-year-old Schylla Samson. According to the arrest affidavit, she became upset with her four children for not doing their chores, so she locked the door and told them they could not return to the apartment.The children spoke with a neighbor, who called the police after they had waited for hours in the parking lot. The affidavit also revealed that this wasn’t the first time the children had experienced something like this. “They’ve had to sleep in car before,” the affidavit stated.When police finally gained entry to the apartment, they discovered far worse conditions than anticipated, including “unsanitary and unlivable conditions” inside. Daytona Beach police reported that trash was scattered across the floor, bugs were present in various areas, and mold was growing on the walls and doors.Police also learned that a fifth child, under a year old, was living in the apartment.While officers were present, Samson faced an additional charge of child abuse on top of the five child neglect charges she was already facing. Police reported hearing a scream, and it was alleged that Samson became angry with her children for calling the police. She allegedly threatened her daughter and slapped her in the face. When the victim tried to escape, Samson reportedly got in her face, took a fighting stance, and punched her in the chest.Samson was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where she is facing six felony charges. She was able to bond out over the weekend. The Department of Children and Families (DCF) has been notified of the incident.
